Andrew Pierre Hart’s Story
What did you make during the residency?
I decided to explore other areas of my practice and approached the residency as encapsulating what happened in the 6 week window. In that window I went to Eindhoven and that became part of my residency experience. I created a wall work of photographic prints, images of Eindhoven and Holborn; anything that spoke of being in this window. With the images, there were two videos, a combination of hand gestures by a Kanika Carr, a Ballerina I work with and digital drawings made whilst in Eindhoven with Serena Huang, a really interesting artist, whom I collaborate with as Hart and Huang. The two works seem to synchronise and speak to each other through gesture. Also, on the wall piece were two drawings of figures that the residency allowed me the time to scale up and finally some paintings but they were not shown.
Being a London based artist, what did gain from taking part in PLOP?
It was really good to be in the studio with fellow london-based artists that I’ve met or been in contact with. Spending time together and seeing their rhythms, sharing ideas and humour. Meeting Robert and Lauren who live in Berlin we became friends, had inspiring conversations, learnt a lot about the Berlin art scene, ate together, hung out. We Face-timed a week or so ago. Making those natural connections is always valuable and made the residency more than just about making.
What connections did you make during the residency?
Arbeitstitel are new members of the international crew. And still follow what the other artists on the residency are up to.
Was there anything that surprised you about your experience?
How much a tall skinny guy can eat - Rob you can eat!
What’s happened to you in the last 18th months since PLOP?
As the residency started, I was in talks with Tiwani Contemporary about a two person show and that was in June of 2020. Since then they offered to represent my work. I've have a solo with the gallery on the 11th March. Lots of stuff has been happening. I studied a PGCE in Academic Teaching in Art and Design, with Shannon who was also on the residency (she gave me the best laugh when she dressed up in Oli's horses head). I’ve almost completed the studies for that. Whilst on the course lots of teaching roles have come up at CSM, Chelsea, Camberwell & LCC. Actually, it's been quite busy. I was also selected for the ARTangel 'Thinking time ' Award, the work for that will be live soon and an in-conversation with Cecile. b. Evans, Paul Maheke, Carl Ghent lead by Jemma Desai on the 11th March. I'm also on a residency at the moment at Beaconsfield Gallery, I’m there as I type this. I showed with Guts Gallery in a series of one person shows with fellow PLOP residency artist Mirranda Forrester... surprisingly busy time, still taking things slowly.
